I’m told that I can move mountains if I have enough faith. But if my mountain doesn’t move, what’s the problem with my faith?

Faith and believing are often used interchangeably, as if they mean the same thing. For sake of our discussion, we need to see faith as something much different, a matter of knowing as opposed to hoping or thinking something is true. In believing, we try to convince ourselves while worrying that we could possibly be wrong.

Faith comes from hearing, then believing.

We can be sure the Holy Spirit spoke to David in his years as a shepherd, for the Spirit is given to guide us, not just to make us feel good about ourselves. David’s practice with a sling probably resulted in more misses than hits—until the day when the Spirit guided his aim against the lion and the bear. His faith didn’t magically appear out of nowhere. First, David heard what God was speaking to his heart, and at some point, he believed that voice.

Faith doesn’t move mountains.

Maybe you’re like I was, led to think that if I just believed harder, then I could apply the misinterpretation of Matthew 17:20, which says a tiny amount of faith is enough for me to move mountains. With that perspective, I can also apply the distortion of Philippians 4:13, as if to say, “I can do anything, because Christ will give me the strength.” Where are those interpretation wrong?

Let’s be clear. Faith isn’t what moves mountains. God does that. Or if we have the earth-moving equipment, we might do that. Without faith, we’ll quit. We won’t make the moves we need to make for God to do the work he wants to do.

Believing is not enough.

Scripture tells us “the devils believe and tremble” (James 2:19), and we know their “believing” isn’t helping them. If we lack the faith that changes our behavior, our confession that we believe in Christ won’t save us from Hell. Writing to the Christians in Galacia, the apostle Paul said, “Your self-serving nature can lead you to such things as infidelity, pornography, and other sexual impurity—contentions, anger, and resentment—false doctrines, psychics, and misplaced worship—envy, jealousy, and preying upon others—alcohol, drugs, and mindless partying. As I’ve said before, don’t think for a second that you can do such things and have any place in the Kingdom of God” (Galatians 5:19–21).

How easily I can misunderstand the Bible verse that says, “All things are possible for those who believe” (Mark 9:13). After the power of possibility thinking failed to yield the results I expected, I finally had to accept the reality that possible means I might get what I want.

I can be thankful for unanswered prayer, because I am sure God has a better plan.

May you, among all believers, be able to understand God in his fullness, that we know the love of Christ, which cannot be fully explained but is known by experience when you are filled with God’s Spirit. May God who is able to do more than we can even imagine, whose power is at work in us, reveal the magnitude of his glory in everyone surrendered to Christ Jesus, both now and forever. Amen. — Ephesians 3:18–21

The plaque on the wall said, Prayer Changes Things. Exactly what things does prayer change? Will God change the thing I want him to change? Is there any thing he won’t change? Why would he say no?

Nothing is impossible with God.

Jesus caused deaf ears to hear. Blind eyes could see. The dead were raised to life. Since God hasn’t changed, we can be sure of what God can do today. Just about anything he wants. But what will God do? That’s the all-important question.

Our greatest need is the Lord.

I wonder if I really know what my greatest needs are. For a long time, what I thought I needed wasn’t what I really needed. But finally, I became aware of my need and prayed.

Jesus knew how to pray.

In the model prayer, Jesus gave us a pattern of how we pray from the heart. May your Kingdom come and your will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us the bread we need for today. Forgive our wrongs as we forgive the wrongs of others. Keep us from temptation and protect us from evil. For yours is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen (Matthew 6:9–13).

Unfortunately, we have used “The Lord’s Prayer” as words to recite, without the heartfelt expressions that Jesus taught.

The guarantee for getting what we want is to want only what God wants.

The apostle Paul told Christians in Philippi that God would supply their needs (Philippians 4:19). He said that after thanking them for their gift to him. I have everything I need, full and overflowing, after Epaphroditus brought your offering, which was like the odor of a sweet-smelling sacrifice, acceptable and most pleasing to God (Philippians 4:18). What was Paul saying? That they didn’t have to worry about getting as long as they were focused on giving. He quoted Jesus as saying, “Greater blessing is found in giving, not receiving” (Acts 20:35).

Prayer changes things.

Prayer makes a difference. I have no doubt. But that doesn’t give me control of what God will do. I’m thankful for that. When I don’t get what I think I need, I can be sure he knows something I don’t know. He has a better plan. If we can understand that, we can be thankful in all things.

What difference does prayer make? What will God change? As we surrender our lives to him, pray without ceasing, and are led by his Spirit, we’ll see the greatest change in our own lives and what we think and do.

If you have unwavering faith, you will not only do things like this, but you will say to this mountain, “Rise and be thrown into the sea,” and it will obey. When faith connects your prayer with what God wants to do, you will see it happen. — Matthew 21:21–22, The Discussion Bible

Everybody gets angry, right? How can that explosive moment be avoided? Is such a transformation even possible?

On a straight country road, my speed wouldn’t have mattered. I was upset. I don’t remember why I was upset, but that’s the way anger works. It’s a kind of temporary insanity. The slightest dissatisfaction could light my fuse. A minute after I floored the accelerator and was speeding down the road, I knew the curve ahead could be a problem. The wet autumn leaves covering the road aided my skid into the ditch. I thought I might flip my father-in-law’s car, but I pulled out of the skid back onto the road, my heart pounding. My girlfriend and I were fine, but the car’s transmission had to be replaced.

For years, I lived with the anger. Psychology and preaching weren’t helping with the control part. One day when my blood was boiling and I was about to explode, I realized that my anger could be fatal. Not only might I kill myself, but I was sure to injure those I loved. I prayed for a miracle. Give me control. It didn’t happen.

How could I lose the feeling that made me want to punch someone in the face? One fact was universally true. Every time I reacted, I paid a high price. I never helped myself. I’d heard people say they felt better after their explosions of anger. Did I agree? Evidently. Why else would I do it? But now I didn’t agree. I knew who I was hurting the most. Me. Relationships were always damaged. People saw me as some kind of monster they needed to avoid. That wasn’t who I wanted to be.

Therefore, fellow believers, listen carefully, speak cautiously, and don’t be controlled by your emotions, for anger will never lead to actions that please God. — James 1:19–20, The Discussion Bible

We can sarcastically say “I love you” and mean something else. We might say “I love you” out of social courtesy, because the words are expected. We have a God-given appetite for love and appreciation, which isn’t easily satisfied. If it were, so many marriages wouldn’t end in divorce.

Loving is often for getting, not giving.

In my human nature, I wasn’t inclined to love anything that wouldn’t love me back. I didn’t know I needed the God nature of unconditional love for others, even my enemies. Why would I do that? Without God’s Spirit living within me, I wouldn’t do that, because it makes no sense.

God’s love is unconditional giving.

His love is entirely contrary to the love of flesh that Adam acquired in the garden of Eden. Adam made a conscious choice for self instead of God. Why? Because Eve was part of his “self,” bone of his bone and flesh of his flesh. That love was not God’s love, because it was self-serving. God’s love is self-sacrificing. We need to understand why God’s nature is better, or we won’t go his way.

I can satisfy my appetite for love only by recognizing, accepting, and experiencing the kind of love that God has. How do I do that? By loving others. To do that, I need the same Spirit that Jesus had from birth. I must be born again, not of the human spirit but of God’s Spirit.

Jesus said, “This is my commandment: love others as I have loved you. There is no greater love than for a man to sacrifice his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do all that I instruct you to do.” — John 15:12–14, The Discussion Bible
