The Most Beautiful Colors

Black Lives Matter is a huge topic these days. Is one color supposed to be better than another?
God made all the colors.
I grew up with no racial prejudice, not because of my white culture but because of a song I learned as a toddler, which described God’s gift of color. Red, yellow, black, or white, all children are precious in God’s sight. Since one color was no better than another, I viewed everyone as precious in God’s sight.
“Privilege” is a matter of perspective.
When I was three years old, I rode the bus on a trip with my parents. I wanted to sit in the back, where I could stand on the seat and look out the back window. “You can’t go back there,” Daddy said. “That’s where the black people sit.” I didn’t think that was fair. What made black people more special than me?
Black is one of countless colors.
I remember the real days of racial prejudice when black people had their own special restrooms and water fountains. People of every color except black had to use the one I used. I wanted a drink from the black water fountain, because I assumed the water there must be better.
My skin color classifies me as white Caucasian, but that’s not who I am. I’m descended from a John Ball who came to America during Paul Revere’s day. Over the last 200 years and dozens of generations, I have mixed red, yellow, black, and white in my blood. Several years ago, I especially enjoyed visiting some of my black kinfolk.
Different colors are good.
Our strengths don’t come from being alike. They come from our differences, because others have what we don’t have. God made us all different, with needs for one another. We should quit complaining about our differences, and do our best to help others.
Enjoy the color of pure gold.
We once had a golden rule that said we should treat others as we would have them treat us. We make a bad mistake if we follow the twisted fool’s-gold rule that says we will be kind to others only after they have been kind to us.
Do what you would have others do to you, for this is the intent of everything taught in the Law and the prophets. — Matthew 7:12, The Discussion Bible
